'NO! Get that out of your mind. It's all of the past, it's no longer mine anymore'
Nellie felt her eyes stinging and her heart tearing. She could remember it all so clearly.
((Flashback))
That time of eating was such a bliss. But as the winter approached, the prey moved South. The pack followed them, but as the drew closer and closer to their wide ranged territory border, the deer and the elk, all their game were disappearing. For who knows why. Nellie was only a pup back then. She remembered curling up in the den, her skin draping her skeleton.
The older wolves, the adults had caught all they could, a measly diet of rabbits and ptarmigans, and gave it to the pups. At last, the flame on the candle flickered too low, and went out for many of the pups and adults. The pack was now reduced by over fifty percent. Only the Alphas, two of the betas, and five pups remained. Then, miraculously food was once again discovered.
It was two carcasses of dead moose. But the glory was short lived. Hardly a bite for each when Nellie remembered hearing a fierce growl. From behind them, there was a very large, and very hungry bear. The bear charged at the carcasses, but was blocked off by both betas.
Nellie and the other pups stuffed themselves full, knowing that this very well could be the last meals they'll ever eat.
The betas fought valiantly, but was thrown off. They landed on the ground, hard, and didn't get up. Then the bear gave a growl and stared right at the carcasses.
Frightened, Nellie and the others scampered off in all directions, hiding in the bushes. But the last two remaining adults, the Alphas wouldn't back down. Then, a horrifying battle began, red staining the pearly snow.
Little did the young Nellie know that this would scar her for life. Not an ordinary scar, but one in her heart.
She and the other pups huddled quietly in the bushes. At last, it was quiet. Nellie peered out of the bush she was in, afraid for what she might see.
Red.
Red in the trees.
Red in the snow.
Red in the sky.
Red...Red...Red...
The bear was unmoving, and the male Alpha was shredded.
The female Alpha lay far off in the bushes, slightly moving. Nellie bolted towards her.
"Nellie dear, listen to me. I don't have much longer"
"Yes...Yes you do! Don't say that!"
The Alphess shook her head slightly, wincing.
"Tell the others to eat as much as they can. Then you all should move on...The moose will draw other carnivores, ones much more powerful than you will be here."
She faltered.
"M...Mo...Mother?"
((End Flashback))
Nellie trembled. It was just so hard. All those things left behind. She turned in a circle thrice and lay down, her tail covering her nose for warmth.
((Flashback))
Her Mother, the Alpha was gone. Gone...The word echoed in Nellies mind. Forever...Nellie's eyes welled up with tears, which flooded out. Then. She was crying, and she couldn't stop.
"Nellie?"
It was Aleta, her best friend.
Aleta peered around Nellie and was horrified at what she saw.
"Oh Nellie! I'm so sorry."
((End Flashback))
It was a wonder how they suvived.
As time passed, Nellie grew to become a young wolf with many beatiful shades of brown, and flecks of yellow in her dark ginger-colored eyes.
((Flashback))
The group had been resting near the stream when there was a sudden arrival of two wolves.
They demanded to be the Alphas.
"...But...I was supposed to be the Alpha." Nellie told the new comers angrily.
"Nellie, calm down, you know how long it takes for you after you get really upset." Aleta reminded her best friend.
"Well, well, well. Look what we have here. A troublemaker. A pretender. A faker." The male wolf said slyly.
He and his mate circled Nellie and her friends at an easy pace.
"I'm not lying! My parents were Alphas, but they died!" spat Nellie.
Aleta winced at the tone of Nellie's voice. She knew that there was going to be trouble.
"Then looks like we'll have to take their place." the female said shrilly.
"No."
The female wolf looked startled.
"How dare you defy us!"
The male leapt towards Nellie and pinned her to the ground. He growled and there was an aura of death in the air.
"NO!" Aleta screamed.
The male slowly raised his head and stared at her.
"Looks like we have a taker.' The male smiled maliciously.
He and his mate attacked Aleta. And as soon as it had started, it ended. The deed was done.
"ALETA!" Nellie cried.
"The same goes for the rest of the pack if you don't get out of here" The male said gruffly.
Nellie's eyes brimmed with tears.
It was her fault, and more of her friends would get hurt.
She slowly backed away and turned around, heading into a trot.
((End FlashBack))
She did see the pack once again, a few weeks ago...But this time, there were only the two Alphas. "Where are my friends?' Nellie thought cruelly in her head. She sighed. She needed to find a pack of her own now. So Nellie set off at a trot to find a home.
