(again this is Shaun Ellis and Monty Sloan's work, and is copyrighted to them.)
"Much of the wolf's hunting success as a pack is based on careful preparations before the hunt. Individuals constantly revise their skills and practice techniques so that every member is ready to play their part. The hunter, the omega, is a specialist animal and is usually female. Females are smaller than the males by approximately 20-25 percent, which usually means they are faster and more agile. There are often one or two wolves within the pack that can sprint like a greyhound- fast enough to catch, turn or run their quarry into an ambush. The hunter may not always be the alpha female in a large pack because she is too valuable to risk getting injured. She will, however, direct operations from the sidelines and will keep control of the lower-ranking wolves during the hunt. As this is difficult she often initiates practice sessions right before the hunt." (To be continued)
